NORTHWOODS FIGURE SKATING CLUB

The Northwoods Figure Skating club is a USFS member. There are over 100 members within our club.

The club skates at four skating rinks throughout their season: Spooner, Rice Lake, Siren & Cumberland. At the end of each season (which is usually in March) the skating club combines their four rinks and puts on a wonderful ice show at the Spooner Rink. This is optional but, all skaters love to have fun and show off their skills they learn throughout the skating season.

Our club offers Basic Skill lessons to boys and girls ages 4 & up. Skaters learn the elements of basic skating. There are many levels to achieve in our Basic Skill-learn to skate program. The levels begin with USFS Snowplow Sam 1, 2 & 3 and then the skaters will begin skills from the basic skill levels 1-8.

Skaters that achieve and pass levels within the club will receive certificates and badges. Badges are of many colors and skaters enjoy accomplishing and collecting them all to be showcased on a shirt or skating bag.

When a skater arrives the first night of skating that skater will be tested by a NFSC coaching staff to see where to place the skater.

The lessons are given for 1 hour each skating night (time is listed under Basic Skills in packet). Levels are broken up into groups according to levels. A NFSC coaching staff and possible on-ice assistant is assigned to each group. Groups vary in the number of skaters in the group and ages.

Each skater will be tested on the last night of the session to see if that skater passed or still needs to work on the level they were placed in.

If your skater is interested in joining and skating with us this is what you will need:
1. Skates that are sharpened and good support on the ankle area (NO DOUBLE BLADES)
2. Two pair of gloves, you may also want to have a hat or ear muffs as the temperature inside the rink is at the freezing level.
3. Appropriate attire-NO JEANS!-Please no snowsuit either as coaches have to be able to see body movement. It is recommended if you have any windpants/sweatshirt and or jacket (because sometimes the ice surface is wet and if skater falls they may become very wet and cold). Layers are recommended so skater stays warm while enjoying and learning skating elements!
4. Pre-Register by filling out and sending in appropriate forms and fee(s) to the rink coordinator.

Included in this packet is the information on the sessions and registration form, NFSC annual membership information and form. On each form there are certain items that need to be filled out by each skating family. Each skating family is required to volunteer 1 hour of their time each session or an option of the $40.00 buyout. There are many various small job duties that you may sign up for to help. The sign up sheet for these will be at the rink with the rink coordinator. The other item is that each skating family is required to participate in one or more of the club’s fundraisers that will begin in the fall. If you choose not to participate in a fundraiser then you may buyout in the amount of $40.00. On the forms there are also other important items that we would like from you, including your email-as the club is collecting emails from our skaters so we can begin to communicate through the internet. There is a portion of the Membership/Hold Harmless form in which we ask for your permission to place possible pictures of your skater on the club’s website. Please review and fill our all forms that are needed-Thank you!
